Glad you're back?*

ER sent me an email today:

I'm home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can we hang out soon? I miss you.

She's been visiting family in Asia for the last month with her boyfriend, sister and her husband, and they just got back late last night.

I was supposed to work out with Jeremy and run 5 miles tonight. We have a 15k in a few weeks, so I didn't want to skip out on those plans, especially since I've hardly worked out over the last two weeks. I emailed ER back and told her when I'd be free the rest of the week. I asked when would work best for her. Her email reply said she was free tonight and tomorrow night, and she listed a few other things. Including the fact that she moves on Monday. (I knew it was soon, but I didn't realize it was that soon.)

So when Jeremy emailed me a little while later to tell me that he has to work late and would miss our workout, I immediately called ER to see if she wanted to meet for dinner. She didn't answer. I texted her to be sure she'd get the message before she made other plans. Just a few minutes later, she texted back: "Do you want to meet up for coffee or ice cream after dinner?"

Hmm.

ER and I are very close. She can order for me at a number of restaurants and get it all exactly right (even the special requests). Of all people, she should know I don't drink coffee.

Ice cream didn't sound particularly good -- especially if I was skipping on the gym. I texted her back, asking if she already had plans for dinner. She responded shortly after: "[Sister] has been cooking." I could understand that. I didn't want her to cancel on her sister -- especially if she'd been cooking.

Not 10 minutes after I got ER's last text, I was leaving work and called ER to set up our ice cream plans. Only she didn't answer the phone. Again.

Now, I know she may have been busy, but it's a pet peeve of mine when people are free to text for 20 minutes when a two-minute phone call can accomplish the same thing much easier. Besides, phones are for placing calls, not text messaging!

That left me feeling frustrated. And it gave me time to think. This is a bad combination for a woman.

ER has been in Asia for a month with her sister, her boyfriend and her sister's husband. Those are no doubt the people she's having dinner with -- otherwise, she'd have told me in the text. It's not a rare occasion for her sister to cook, so that's not it either.

There's also the fact she'd told me she was free. Why would she tell me she was free tonight if she wasn't?

And why would the girl who knows I want the #1 with cheese, mustard, and no tomatoes or onions; fries; and a vanilla Coke -- without seeing the menu -- ask if I wanted to meet for coffee?!

Especially if she's moving hours away in less than a week?

I'm so annoyed I don't even want to meet up anymore!

*UPDATE (7-2-08)

ER and I did wind up meeting for ice cream last night. It took about 30 minutes or so for us to feel like ourselves again. I think we were both kind of tired -- hers from jetlag, and mine because I was just really tired all day yesterday for some reason.

So it went well and everything's fine now. I still can't believe she's moving so soon! I think we're going to go for pedicures on Saturday. That'll be some good bonding time before she leaves.

Evidently I've had some funny conversations lately

Topeka, Jeremy and I all went out to dinner a few nights ago with some of Jeremy's childhood friends, who are now husband and wife and were in town for a concert.

Jeremy grew up in the same neighborhood as the husband. The husband had started dating his wife, Erica, in high school. They all grew up in OKC -- quite a ways away from the small Oklahoma town I grew up in.

Seeing as how Erica and her husband were going to a concert, we were all talking about music. We were discussing popular songs and artists and which ones we loved and which ones made us want to beat our heads against a wall.

Erica said, "Oh! I really love [fairly new male artist]."

"Oh my gosh! One of my guy friends helped him with that album! He co-wrote one of the songs on it!" I said, excited.

Erica got this weird look on her face. "What's your friend's name?"

"Daniel [last name]."

"That's my ex-boyfriend!" Erica said.

Topeka, who grew up in Houston, immediately blurted out, "How small is Oklahoma?!"

Guess what I'm sending K in his next care package?

When I talked to K on Friday, he told me about one of the guys who'd just gotten back from R&R. This guy is a little ... different, if you will. He and his wife are a very open, very liberal couple, to put it nicely.

Anyway, the wife sent this guy an email saying, "Call me immediately." Of course, that's the fastest way to freak these poor guys out while they're on the other side of the planet on deployment. And of course her request came while the phones were down. So the guy emailed his wife back, explained about the phones and asked her to just email him whatever it was she needed to tell him.

Her response was a lone photo of her and their daughter, who was holding up a sign that said: "Tob!as worked! I'm gonna be a big sister!"

Evidently the guy and his wife really wanted to get pregnant. I hadn't heard the Tob!as story before, and because I was so much in shock that (a) these people are procreating again (They have two kids already, but for Pete's sake, they're swingers! That's three people who might think such behavior is acceptable!) and (b) they prayed every time before they had sex, I can't even remember what little information K told me about the Tob!as story.

But basically this husband and wife prayed every time before they had sex that the wife would be blessed with a child. If she did get pregnant, they promised that they would name their baby Tob!as.

Me: "But what if they have a girl?"

K: "I don't know, they name her Tob!a?"

Me: "I wonder why they thought they'd have trouble getting pregnant. I'm pretty sure a barren woman could get pregnant while her husband's home on R&R. That being said ..."

K: "You're doubling up on birth control pills in September?"

Me: "Pretty much."

K: "You need to just start drinking lots of Mountain Dew. ... Well, actually, that's more for me."

Me: "Mountain Dew is supposed to low.er your sperm c.ount?

K: "Supposedly."

Me: "Well, you know what's really supposed to work? Briefs. Maybe you should switch to those soon. Just through September."

K: "What? I'm not changing to briefs!"

Me: "Well, would you rather change to briefs for a couple months or be changing diapers for a few years?"

All work and no play ...

Since I got promoted, work has picked up quite a bit. I've felt a little burned out lately, which is probably why I haven't blogged much lately. This four-day work week is coming just in time! It'll be four hellacious days of work, what with this project I've got to get moving on, but it'll be wonderful to have that Friday off! And it's the Fourth of July, which is my favorite holiday! Score!

When it's not projects keeping me super busy at work, I've had plenty of other things keeping me working extra hours.

I'm head of a committee at work that is sending car.e packages to sold!ers. Several weeks ago, we collected names and addresses of employees' friends and family members who are deployed with the military. We held fundraisers over the last month and a half or so, and it all came together this week when we assembled the packages and shipped them out. We sent 24 packages, and we'll probably be sending a couple more in a month or so. It feels good to know we did that, but it's also nice to know we're done. It took a lot of planning!

I got to talk to K last night for the first time in two weeks. The phones have been down for the last week, so we were really missing each other. It was good to get to catch up on things. K is doing well. They're doing a lot of good things where he is -- repairing schools, fixing up soccer fields, renovating neighborhoods to increase the standard of living.

Since he switched jobs in March, he's doing a lot more office-type work now. He's planning missions and things like that. He's doing good, important work, but I know he misses being out there with the soldiers. Unfortunately, it'll probably be a few years before his rank will allow the level of interaction he had for the last year and a half. He's climbing the ladder, though, and is constantly getting good remarks from his superiors, so that's good.

K is actually up for his first look at getting promoted to ma.jor. We won't find out anything until probably late August, though. It's really hard to get promoted on your first look, so we're trying not to get our hopes up too much. There are a lot of factors that go into the promotion, and only a small percentage can be promoted early. We'll see what happens.

K says we should also know where he'll be stationed next in August or September. That will be some exciting news. We probably won't start looking for a house or anything until after the deployment is over, but I can at least start researching neighborhoods and things. I can't wait for that -- it'll be so nice to get to live in the same place. We won't know what to do with ourselves!

We're still trying to figure out what our plan will be for K's R&R. It's going to be here before we know it. We had planned on Costa Rica, but I told K that I think we should just save that vacation for after the deployment. When K is on R&R, we'll be so excited to be together that we won't care where we are. It just doesn't make sense to me to spend thousands on a vacation when we'd be happy doing nothing.

We know we're going to PA for a week or so (no longer than a week, for both my sanity's sake and my selfishness at not wanting to share K for any longer than that! I get 18 days with him in 2008, and I want those 18 days!) to visit his family.

For a trip for the two of us, we talked about just going to Florida or something for a few days. We could just drive there and stay until we're ready to leave. That sounded like a good plan.

K and I decided to just keep our schedules open. We'd obviously have to get plane tickets for PA, but we would just see what we wanted to do when K got here. That was our plan. Until the very next day, when K talked to his dad. Evidently his dad has a week at a time share that he's not going to use. He wants to give it to us (it has to be used by November, so we can't save it for later) since we didn't really get a honeymoon (Yes, I know the wedding was in Florida, but we were there only 3 days -- the day before, the day of the ceremony, and the day after. One day is hardly a honeymoon.). We can choose from several different locations. It's really sweet and generous of K's dad to give us that. How can we turn it down?

So it's back to the drawing board planning for those 18 days. At least that's some work I don't mind spending a little extra time on!

True story

I made a quick trip to the mall tonight. When I was leaving and got to my car in the parking garage, I noticed a rather large truck was squeezed into the spot next to me. I wondered how anyone could get out without hitting my car. I walked around to the passenger's side. Sure enough, there was a ding near the door that I didn't remember being there. Just to be sure, I put my finger at the edge of the truck's door and swung my hand out to see if it would line up. It did.

So I wrote a note and left it on his windshield:

You hit my car with your door. That was not nice.
Thanks for the new gray mark. Please be more careful.

Here's hoping next time, the driver won't squeeze into such a small spot -- and if he does, maybe he'll be more careful with his door.

Night in + romantic movie + glass of wine = confessions

These are a few months old, but they haven't been shared before, so here goes:

1) A few months back, I was taking a quick mental break at work by checking MySpace. I was reading one of those "deep" bulletin surveys a friend had posted. Like I always do when I read those, I considered my answers to the questions as I went along. I got to one that asked, "Are you living your life to the fullest?" My answer was no. And I was OK with that for right now.

2) In late January, when I had my one-year anniversary at work, I took a picture of the first-year gift we're given and sent it to K. He sent me an email telling me he was proud of me. What he meant as a nice email actually kind of ruined my night.

All I'd done was stay at my job for a year. It's not like I'd never done that before. I hadn't been promoted. I had just stayed at a job I loved for a year -- a job that lets me bring my dog to the office, wear jeans whenever I want, and have a beer at my desk if I want to, every single day. Who would leave that?

The fact that merely staying in such a great environment for a year had K telling me he was proud made me feel like I haven't done much to make him proud to begin with. He's on the other side of the planet doing amazing things. The things he's done and the things he has ahead of him are wonderful. He has the respect of the soldiers he works around, his peers and his superiors. I never would have imagined I could be so proud of the man I'd marry.

And I sit at a desk all day, saving the world from superfluous commas. Funny how having such a bad-ass husband puts your life in perspective.

On a side note, Piper barks and heads to the door when a doorbell rings on TV. I don't have a doorbell. It's weird the things they pick up on.

OK, time for bed.

Yes, yes, I know

I'm sucking at this blogging thing. For the longest time (read: December through February) it was because I felt like my life was boring. I was doing nothing but work and working out. I was trying to make it day by day through this deployment.

Somewhere in there, things started looking up and it felt less like I had nothing to blog about and more like I simply had no time to blog. That's where I am right now, still.

Yes, I've been back from Tahoe for a week. I had just gotten almost totally caught up on reading my blogs. I posted two times in one weekend. That was big for me even when I'm blogging almost daily. I teased you with the thought of posting pictures on Sunday night.

And then I got back to Dallas. If it makes you feel better, I had even composed a post in my head Sunday night. I just didn't have time to write it.

Monday night, I was unpacking and doing laundry and such. Tuesday was the gym and running. Wednesday I was going to blog. And then I wound up working until 1 a.m.

I managed to work 68 hours last week. See how I had no time to blog?

So this week, things are kind of slowing down again -- only I'm still trying to get settled again. After two weekends in a row of being on diffrent sides of the country, I needed my Saturday to chill, relax and get a few things done (like post pictures). Instead, I worked 12 hours.

Hopefully soon I'll really be able to post pictures and fill you in on what's going on. Especially since this week it's more than just work.

Dallas bound

ER's dad (a frequent traveler) always says the sign of a great vacation is when you're ready to come home. I understand his reasoning, but I don't think that statement is entirely true. If I were to judge my Tahoe trip by that criteria alone, then I couldn't call it a good trip. I was absolutely not ready to come home ... but the trip was great.

As for the wedding, I won't steal Heather's thunder by posting pictures. I can tell you, though, that it'll be worth the wait until she gets back from her fantastic honeymoon in Fiji to post them for you. She looked absolutely gorgeous. The wedding was amazing. The weather was perfect. The location was beautiful. The reception was a blast.

I was sad to drop off my fabulous convertible rental car today, and I was not ready to leave such beautiful scenery. I sent K some pictures the first night I got here, though, and he's in full agreement that we'll be taking a trip to Tahoe together in the future.

So hopefully I'll be visiting again in the not-too-distant future. It's too beautiful to not see again. I'll post more pictures later (hopefully tonight, but no promises). For now, I've got a plane to board. Back to the real world ...

Saturday, June 07, 2008

I'm so dragging K back here!

I'm in Tahoe for Heather's wedding, and oh my gosh, it is gorgeous!

So far, it hasn't been bad being here by myself. It hasn't been an issue, really.

As soon as I landed in Reno, I picked up my rental car. I was really surprised when I went to pick it up. I was expecting some kind of tiny compact car -- nothing special, but economical. When I got to the parking spot I had been told I'd find my car, I was very excited to see a Ford Must.ang convertible waiting for me. Score!

The drive to Tahoe was beautiful. I stopped off at a scenic point to get some pictures along the way.

When I got to my hotel, I checked in and had just enough time to freshen up a little bit and then head to Heather's lingerie shower. It was fun and just the right amount of silly. After the shower, we all went to dinner. We called it an early night afterward since a lot of us were tired from traveling and so the bride could get her beauty sleep.

Since I'm so behind on sharing other pictures, I'm posting a couple from my scenic stop. There will definitely be more later!

There really are pictures, and they really are coming

I got back from Florida on Monday morning. I now owe you even more pictures than I did before. But because my computer freakin' sucks (dude, don't get a D.ell), you'll have to wait a little bit longer to get them. But they really are coming. I promise. And you know I'm good for it.

Since I last posted, Memorial Day came and went. I worked a bit on the weekend, but I also managed to find plenty of time for BBQs and time around the pool. Someone stole my sunglasses, which sucked. I didn't realize how much I loved them until they were gone. I bought them with K in October while he was on his R&R before the deployment. So whoever stole them? I'm pretty sure it'll bite you in the butt. Stealing sunglasses with pre-deployment sentimental value from an Army wife on Memorial Day weekend while her husband is deployed? Oh, karma will surely be bad.

Sunday, my boss had a pool party at her house. I hadn't been there 5 minutes when K called -- go figure. I was able to talk to him for a few minutes. The news about his cousin had hit him pretty hard, but he was doing well, considering. We only talked for a few minutes since the call was kind of at a bad time.

Last week itself was kind of a blur. Every night was busy! Tuesday night, I did my standard workout, followed by a 4-mile run in 90 degree weather (that's the temp, not the heat index). Wednesday night, I hosted an Arbo.nne party for Miss Elle at my apartment. It was kind of funny to have so many worlds collide like that. Heather and Elle were there from Blogland; ER came; and Topeka, Brit, and AJ were there too. Many of them hadn't met before, so that was fun. Elle did such a great job!

On Thursday, I went to the movies with ER at 12:02 a.m. (so I guess it was technically Friday morning) to see Sex and the City. I had planned on waiting, but when ER's friend she was originally supposed to go with cancelled, I told ER I'd go. It meant that I only got a little over 3 hours of sleep since I had so much to do that night, but I'm glad I went. It was good to catch up with ER, and it was a good movie!

Friday, I got a small promotion. It came with a very welcome 6-plus percent raise. Sweet!

That afternoon, I flew to Orlando to meet two Army wife friends. Ry is from NYC, and she's married to one of K's former lieutenants. Katy is actually an Army fiance. She lives in Daytona. Her fiance came home on his R&R in March. He's getting out of the Army when they get back from Iraq, so he and Katy went house hunting while he was home. They found and bought a gorgeous house, so Ry and I had to go check it out!

Ry's flight arrived earlier than mine, so she and Katy met me at the baggage claim, and we immediately headed to see SATC, since they hadn't seen it yet. Saturday was spent lying around the pool for the first part of the day. Then, we headed to the beach to play in the water and see the shuttle launch. That night, we went out for dinner and then to a gay bar (my first time). The bar was OK, but there weren't many people there. There were also many more straight people than I'd expected. I'll have to give it another shot in Dallas, I guess.

After we got home, we got in the pool for a little bit. Ry was ready to call it a night at about 3:00 a.m. Katy got this crazy idea to stay up and watch the sun rise on the beach, so after some convincing, Ry and I climbed into the car and headed to the beach with her. We took a couple blankets so we could lie on one and use the other for cover. Ry and I definitely napped for a while! I woke up about 20 minutes before sunrise. I talked to Katy for awhile until it was time to wake Ry. The sunrise was gorgeous. Since I had gone all the way out there to watch it, I made sure it was very well documented.

We stopped off for some breakfast and then headed back to Katy's, where we promptly went to sleep. We spent the afternoon in the pool again. That night, we ordered Chinese takeout and watched cheesy TV shows and movies. It was crazy to see how quickly the weekend had gone. It was relaxing, though. I needed the getaway!

Monday was back to work and my regular schedule. I heard from K that night, so I got to tell him all about our trip.

The week isn't quite back to normal yet, though. I'm going to dinner with ER tomorrow night, and then I have to pack for the weekend. I leave Friday for Heather's wedding. Obviously since it's a wedding, it's not quite a vacation and I won't quite be by myself, but this will be the closest to a vacation that I've ever taken by myself. We'll see how it goes.

I'm looking forward to it, though. I'm excited for Heather and B, and I know the wedding will be gorgeous. I'm renting a car, so I plan on doing plenty of sight seeing -- and taking plenty of pictures.

I swear, when I finally get around to it, this is gonna be one hell of a picture post!

Friday, May 30, 2008

Still crazy busy!!!

But I'll have some fun pics to post this weekend!

I'm leaving work in 14 minutes, and I'm headed straight for the airport. I'm going to Florida tonight for a fun getaway with some other Army wives. I'm so pumped!!!

Oh, and ... I just got promoted. Sweet!

Looks like I'll have plenty to post about next week -- if things ever slow down!!!

Because I can't lie to you

Yes, it's late Friday night, and yes, I'm really really tired and want to go to bed, and yes, I'm incredibly sore from possibly the worst workout I've ever done (Running 2.5 miles to a track/park area; doing lunges all.the.way.around. said track -- that's 100 meters, people -- and doing 25 sit-ups and 25 push-ups every fourth of the way around; only to run 2.5 miles back to the car. I'm officially walking like an old lady today.) ... and yes, it's almost midnight and I'm still working.

But because I promised you I'd do this post today, I'm writing it now. I may never give you a promise with a deadline again.

So here goes ...

I was already in Oklahoma for my old roomie's graduation. I thought I could kill two birds with one stone and swing through my mom's hometown on my way back to Dallas. Because I knew the moment I mentioned to her I was considering the visit I'd have to follow through, I waited until the day before to mention it to my mom. So that Sunday morning -- which happened to be Mother's Day (just a coincidence) -- I got up early and made the drive to her town.

When I got close to her home, I called her, and decided I'd meet her and her husband at Chi!i's, since none of us had eaten lunch yet. I was glad we'd be meeting in a public place so I could avoid some overly emotional reunion at her house.

When I walked in the restaurant, my mom and her husband were already there. I gave each of them a hug before I sat down with them. I had worried my mom would give some drawn-out hug or something, but she didn't. Whew.

Over the course of lunch, my mom talked about the weirdest things. She told me about her trip to Oklahoma C!ty with her husband the day before, and how they'd gone to the movie THEE-ate-uhr. My mom talked about that experience for a while. She said it was like heaven, and she talked about how big it was and how good the popcorn was. She told me how the movie theater in their town doesn't salt the popcorn, so you have to salt it yourself, so once you get past the top layer it tastes really blah ... and you'd think they'd want to salt the heck out of it because then people will be buying more drinks.

I told my mom about our Stud!o Mov!e Gr!ll theaters where you can eat dinner while you're at the movies. I was just making conversation, but my mom actually turned to her husband (we were seated at the bar to avoid the endless wait for a table) to say to him, "She said they have THEE-ate-uhrs where you can eat while you watch the movie!"

My mom asked to see my ring. She noted I was wearing my hair shorter. She asked about K. Her husband asked where K was. (Surely he knew K was in Iraq ...) They asked about my bike ride the week before and had lots of questions about my helmet and bike.

My mom started filling me in on the big news scandals from her town over the past year. She told me about her new job. She told me about the new $7 million building of the company her husband works for. They talked about the chairs and how neat they were ("They're like $1,000 apiece!"). As they described them, I realized they may very well be the exact same chairs all the employees at my office have -- only it never occurred to me to tell anyone about the chairs (they're chairs).

My mom went on about the big TV screens and how they can use them to have meetings via satellite with people in their office in Houston (the same thing we do with our other offices across the country). By the time she got to telling me about the ceiling ("There's no ceiling! You can see the wires and tubing. It's all just exposed!" Which is exactly what we have at work), I started to wonder if living in such a big city has made me spoiled and maybe even a little snobby.

I had noticed my mom's ... Southern, if you will, pronunciation of the word "theater." It occurred to me that I used to pronounce the word that way, but I stopped in college.

I tried to consider things from her perspective. While a $7 million building is no big deal in Dallas, it's very big for her hometown. And maybe the technology, the ceiling and, yes, even the chairs are a big deal there too. But we'd still managed to talk for 10 minutes about movie theater popcorn.

Was I too snobby and spoiled to carry on small talk? But then as I thought about it more, I realized I talk about much smaller things than popcorn with my dad and friends all the time. I'm perfectly capable of talking about things like chairs and popcorn and ceilings.

I can talk about small things all day. But this wasn't typical small talk. It wasn't laid-back, comfortable small talk. It was just empty conversation. She was nervous.

After lunch, we headed back to her house. When we got inside, my mom asked, "Do you want to sit in the living room or in the back yard?"

I hadn't prepared for the small cold front that came through. I was only wearing flip flops and short sleeves. My mom was in a sweatshirt and pants. "It's a little cool out," I said.

"Well, let's go sit in the yard. We can get some sun," my mom answered. I'd only done the M$150 the week before, so I wasn't interested in getting any sun, but I didn't want to argue over where we were sitting. I did wonder why she'd bothered asking where I wanted to go if she wasn't going to listen anyway.

So we went to the back yard. Just as I sat down in a chair, she called me over to her little goldfish pond to show me the fish she and her husband had bought the day before. There were easily 20 fish in this pond, so pointing out 3 and expecting me to know which ones she's talking about was a little pointless, but I tried my best. We stared into the pond for about 10 minutes before I sat down. We sat outside for over an hour talking.

When we stepped inside to get something to drink, I took the opportunity to fetch my laptop from my car so I could show my mom and her husband pictures from the bike ride. After we looked at them, I waited for my mom to say something about wedding pictures. She didn't, so I asked if she wanted to see them. She said yes, so I pulled up the album. I went through our professional pictures and then the ones taken on my camera. She said they were pretty, that the beach was gorgeous and that I looked pretty. She laughed when I pointed out that K had left his yellow L!vestrong bracelet on during the ceremony. (groan)

After we finished looking through the pictures, I realized it was an hour past when I'd intended to leave. I had to get on the road so I could pick up Piper from being boarded. It was good because it gave me a nice out. I had a reason I needed to leave, so it wasn't like I was cutting the visit short or something.

We'd spent about 4 hours together. They didn't go badly, obviously, but they weren't awesome either. As I thought about it on my way back to Dallas, I became more and more convinced that my mom was just nervous. I'd seen her goldfish pond many times before, and she'd never tried to point out specific fish to me or made me stare at it for 10 minutes.

When I got inside my apartment, I called my mom to let her know I'd made it home safely -- and that I'd gotten sunburned from being outside (I was very annoyed at that, especially since I had wanted to stay inside to begin with! I did my best to keep those feelings to myself.). I told my mom how much I had to do that night and how badly I wanted to just go to sleep. She told me to put it all off until the next night and to go to bed early.

It wasn't that simple, though. I needed to get those things done that night -- things like changing my sheets and making a care package for K. My mom called me a couple times more that night to tell me to go to bed. I didn't. I was a little annoyed and worried that the visit had given her the impression that she could bombard me with phone calls.

Luckily, though, that was the only night she did that. We're still only talking a couple times a week. Right now, I like it that way. I wish we could talk more, but I think baby steps are very important. And they seem to be working right now.

We don't have plans to see each other again yet, but I'm sure we will eventually. And I'm sure on that visit, we'll have much more interesting things to talk about -- especially since we can cross ceilings, movie popcorn and goldfish off our list.

Happy birthday, Piper!

Thanks for sitting still juuuuuuust long enough to let me take this picture.

Sorry to delay the Mom post one more day. After my boot camp-like workout tonight, I'm about to die. Must. go. to. sleep. But I promise the post will come tomorrow.

There. Now it has to. I promised.

Two weeks, one post

My my, has life been hectic lately. I'm afraid you'll be a little upset with me when you find out one of the MAJOR things that happened well over a week ago ... and I haven't blogged about it yet. But that's how busy I've been! Seriously!

Here's a taste:

Friday, May 9: Went to Sw!tchfoot & Gav!n DeGr.aw concert with AJ & College Friend. both were awesome (especially Sw!tchfoot). (pictures coming)

Saturday, May 10: Went to OK to celebrate my old roomie's graduation. (pictures coming)

Sunday, May 11: On my way back to Dallas, stopped by to see my mom -- for the first time since Christmas of 2006.

Talked to K for over an hour. It was the longest we'd talked in months!

Monday through Thursday: Work. Gym. Repeat.

Friday, May 16: Rode bikes 22 miles with AJ. Went to concert to see Eve 6 (who seemed very bored with themselves) and Everc!ear (who was AWESOME).

Saturday, May 17: Did 40-mile bike ride with AJ that morning. Immediately after ride, dropped my car off at my apartment, then headed north with AJ to meet my grandpa & great uncle near the Texas border to pick up a roasted pig that my dad had cooked. Dropped off pig at ER's parent's house. Went home & showered. Made fruit salad. Headed to ER's for luau party. (pictures coming)

Sunday, May 18: Tried to force myself to stay home and do nothing. It worked in the morning, but not so much at night. Oh well ... Still managed to get to bed really late for all I had to do that night.

Monday, May 19: Work. Gym. Got to talk to K. Made him a care package, complete with new & awesome pean.ut butter cookie recipe.

Tuesday, May 20: I think Piper did such a good job vacuuming my kitchen floor while I was cooking that she really upset her stomach. She destroyed my carpet yesterday morning. I spent 30 minutes before work picking up, blotting and finally scrubbing. And 30 minutes after. Good thing it's a long weekend. I'm pretty sure I'll be steam cleaning my carpet. Oh well, it's a good excuse to do it.

Work. Four-mile run.

Phone calls with K's family. Evidently K has a cousin who was in Afghanistan. (I think K had told me this once before, but I must've forgotten.) The cousin had only been in Afghanistan since January. He was killed yesterday morning by a roadside bomb.

K's dad and brother wanted me to tell K about it next time I talk to him, but that probably won't be until next week. I had to try to send K a nonchalant email telling him I'd heard from his dad & brother and that they're fine, but they need to talk to him. I'm not sure how close he was to this cousin, but either way, I didn't want to tell K what happened in an email. Hopefully he gets in touch with his family soon, and hopefully he handles it OK.

I'm sure it's hard on his family to know that this happened and to still have one family member who's deployed. I felt really guilty for the thought that entered my head when I realized that. So guilty that I can't voice the thought by putting it here (and I'll definitely never say it aloud), but I'm sure you can figure it out.

Please pray for his family right now.

Wednesday, May 21 (today): Work. I was supposed to go to the gym, but I skipped it. There's been too much going on, and I needed the break.

I've actually got a big few days coming up, as far as markers go.

Tomorrow (May 22): Piper's 1st birthday. I can't believe my little puppy is growing up so fast!

May 23: Official countdown begins for K's and my "real" wedding. Which means I have to start planning. And find a dress already. I don't feel stressed about it, though, because our reception is booked and halfway paid for, and the church is booked. That was done BEFORE the Florida wedding in September. And we have a really awesome photographer. And I've talked to a cake lady. Plus, since we got our perfect wedding in September, it takes the pressure of perfection off of this one.

But ONE YEAR FROM THIS DAY, K and I will finally get to live together. Ah, bliss!

Saturday, May 24: This was supposed to be my wedding day.

Monday, May 26: Three years from the day I met K. Since we didn't get to see each other again until the Fourth of July weekend that year, we spent a TON of June on the phone with each other. So much so that it felt stupid to say we started dating Fourth of July weekend (honestly, that was when we both realized we'd get married someday). So we celebrate Memorial Day weekend as our anniversary.

Tuesday, May 27: The 6-month marker of the deployment. That's a lot -- but we'll still have 9 to go.

Wednesday, May 28 (while we're throwing in big dates): CG's wedding anniversary! If these two hadn't gotten married, I wouldn't have met K. Well, I'd actually like to think God would have brought us together eventually, but thanks to them, I didn't have to wait as long. :)
(The 28th is actually my mom's wedding anniversary with her husband, too.)

So those are all the big things lately (and coming up). I promise I'll post pictures of all the fun things soon, and I'll definitely post about seeing my mom for the first time in almost a year and a half.

For now, I'm getting ready for bed. I might actually get to go to sleep before midnight! (Heck, for me lately, 12:30 is still really early!)

After today, I'll be making some minor changes to my morning routine

I had quite the morning today! It stormed last night and was still raining this morning. I was getting around a little later than usual. I walked out of my apartment at 8:45, 8:50ish. I did the same thing I do every morning: I went to my car and put my laptop in my trunk. I put my keys and purse in the front seat. Then, I went to the grass on the side of my building so Piper could use the bathroom before we left.

Since it was raining, her feet were all wet. I walked to my passenger's side door to spread her blanket over the seat and let her in on that side so she wouldn't get my seat covered in mud. The door was locked, so I walked back around to the driver's side to unlock it. I hit the button, closed my door and walked back to the passenger's side to let Piper in. Only instead of UNlocking my door, I had locked it. And closed it. And locked myself out of my car.

Thank goodness with K being gone, I always have my phone on me -- and thank goodness it has Google maps on it! I was able to find a locksmith and call to have someone come break into my car. I waited and waited and waited. Finally, at 10:00 (about 40 min. after I called), a locksmith showed up. About 20 minutes and $90 later, I had my keys and purse.

What just goes along with my morning is that as soon as I opened my door to get my keys and purse, Piper took that as her cue to hop in the car. So even after my ridiculous effort to keep my seat from getting muddy, Piper still managed to get filthy paw prints all over it. Go figure!

Probably not the answer he was expecting

One of my old roommates from my senior year in college graduated last weekend, so I went to Oklahoma City to celebrate with her and our other two former roomies. The graduate's boyfriend, Daniel, was there, and I hadn't seen him in about 2 1/2 years.

"So how's married life?" he asked me.

I gave a little laugh, thinking he was joking since not much besides my last name and the presence of another ring on my finger has changed since the wedding. So I answered, "There's less talking and a lot less sex."

I guess Daniel forgot that K is deployed, because he gave me this odd, worried look. All my old roommates were laughing, and they reminded Daniel that K is in Iraq.

You could instantly see the relief on his face.

Hallelujah!

I'm generally a pretty happy (OK, very happy) person. I'm usually smiling, and I love talking to people pretty much about anything and everything. Since K left, I've felt like a walking zombie most of the time. Oftentimes over these past five-plus months, I've just wished I was invisible so I could avoid conversations. I wanted to avoid the pained look people would (understandably so, I guess) give me when they find out K is in Iraq. I've forced so many smiles and tried to act normal and not give away the worry, the stress and the fears that were consuming my thoughts and, really, my life. For five months, I just didn't feel like me.

But not these last few days.

There are a few things I think might have caused this sudden, oh-so-welcome change. It could be cycling and how pleased I am with my workouts and exercise right now. It could be the new friends I've made. It could be the fact I've eaten pizza and pineapple in the last week. Heck, it could even (albeit highly unlikely) have something to do with my sudden increase in water consumption.

Most of it, though, I suspect is due to the fact that I'm doing a lot of exploring and questioning with religion right now. I'm growing as a Christian. It's exciting.

So I'll go more in-depth on this later (probably next week), but I had to share. Finally, I feel like me again. And I LOVE IT!

I get my own holiday!

I thought I'd have to have kids to get my own date on the calendar (outside of my birthday). Turns out all I had to do was marry K.

Since 1984, when it was started by President Ronald Reagan, Military Spouse Day has been observed on the Friday before Mother's Day. This is a neat press release from last year that explains more about the holiday.

So even though it's about an hour and a half early, I'd like to wish a happy Military Spouse Day to CG, GFF, Alyssa and mrsssg. It's pretty cool to get our own holiday for standing by our superhero husbands!

This is why I'm hot

Once you get into cycling, you realize that very little of its culture fits in with the world beyond cycling. Things everyone else steers completely clear of are exactly what cyclists gravitate to. Perfect examples:
  1. Spandex

  2. Carbs

  3. Sodium
The spandex is bad enough on its own, but leave it to cyclists to take it from bad to worst by padding the crotch.

We wear helmets that might make us look a little dorky, but they save our lives. We walk around with grease from the chains and dirt from the tires on our legs and hands. We drink pickle juice by the bottle.

We stand in line for porta potties, and because we don't have the luxury of "real" bathrooms, we can go hours and hours without washing our hands. We're lucky if we have hand sanitizer.

As if all of that didn't make us weird enough, we wind up with tan lines in the most random, hard-to-hide places.

(Note the shorts line AND sock line!)

(Also featuring two lines -- the gloves line and the participant bracelet line!)

(Note to
self for next year: Don't forget to put sunscreen on the sides of your neck. The sun does actually hit there. And when you reapply sunscreen on your arms, legs and face later in the day, don't forget to reapply on your neck and your chest!)
