The craziness continues ...

Geez, I said I was going to come back to this thing, but I'm determined to make a liar out of myself, I guess. K and I are in our fifth week of marathon training, and I'm shocked how much time it takes up already. Not the running, necessarily, but the extra water drinking and snacking (burning those extra calories takes a toll quickly!) ... the extra peeing ... the extra sleeping ...

We typically run in the morning, and we still try to go to the gym and lift at night. If we miss the gym, it's because we're going to a concert or hanging out with friends -- or packing to go somewhere and see somebody.

We really never stop, I swear!

We actually had a power outage last Friday morning, and we were all able to go home early. Because of that, I was finally able to take care of the house work I'd been neglecting due to all that resting.

And it looks like there's no resting this week. We have the gym tonight, a movie with friends tomorrow, packing on Wednesday, a concert on Thursday, and early Friday we're heading to OK & TX for another wedding. The one where I'm maid of honor. The one where I have to give a speech about my friend marrying a guy I don't like.

I still need to write that thing.

Geez, does it ever stop?

What an awesome day!

  • I got a card for free panties and $10 off a bra at Victoria's Secret.
  • I decided to go ahead and buy a new bra because I have three of my favorite kind, and they're almost all I ever wear. The more I have, the more I cycle through, and the longer they last. When I got to the register, the print I had chosen was on sale for $25 because it was evidently a Valentine's print. That means I got a $42 bra and an $8.50 pair of panties for $25.
  • There's a cute pair of purple faux croc peep-toe pumps I had been eyeing at Nine West. I couldn't justify buying them. I saw them at T.J. Maxx a few weeks ago, but I still told myself I didn't need them. They were less than $30, and I haven't quit thinking about them. When I went by T.J. Maxx today just for giggles, they didn't have my size (8.5). They did have a pair in size 7.5. I tried them on, and since they're peep toes, they actually fit! They're mine now!
  • I'd been wanting to find a cute, small serving tray for things like chicken parmesan. I found one at T.J. Maxx ... for $7.50.
  • As a true PA boy, K's favorite beer is Yuengling (which is brewed in PA, although they now have a second brewery in Tampa). Anyway, for a limited time, they're selling their Bock beer in stores. (Whether it's seasonal or a special beer, they don't always brew it.) We didn't know if we'd be able to find it down here, but K had been on the lookout. Today, I found some.
  • I got an email from another potential MeetUp friend!
  • I also got an email about a potential job. It's a web writing position. I've got a phone interview Thursday!

Things you should try

  1. Watching Zombieland. When K and I saw it at the theater, I just knew I'd hate it. The first 5 minutes were exactly what I expected. I prepared myself for torture ... and boy, was I surprised! The movie is so funny! It came out on video last night, so we watched it again. Hilarious!
  2. Halestorm. You may not be a rock music fan, but seriously, give them a listen. Lzzy's voice is just amazing -- and it's even better in person! K and I saw them in concert Monday night for the 3rd time. Man, can that girl wail! Considering 2009 was their breakout year, I wouldn't be surprised to see them explode in 2010.
  3. H&M. If you don't live near one, you may be lucky enough to wind up near one at some point this year. If that's the case, make the trip. It's worth bringing a bigger suitcase!
  4. Envirosax bags. I love these things so much that I gave them to my closest friends as Christmas gifts this year. Who wouldn't want to save the planet and look good doing it?!
  5. ULTA's formaldehyde-free and toluene-free nail polish. (That means it's more environmentally friendly than most other nail polishes!) It stays on great, and I am loving Deep Desire on my fingernails right now. I can't find it on the website, but thank goodness I found it in the store! It's a nice dark purply color, so it's a subtler version of the gothic black nails everyone seems to be wearing right now. It's a perfect winter shade!
Oh, and speaking of that concert on Monday, I have to share a picture of the loot I scored during the performance of the headliner band, Theory of a Deadman.

That's right, a guitar pic and a drumstick. I actually managed to get 4 guitar pics, but I gave the other 3 away to people who didn't get one. Why not share, right?

Happy Hump Day!

I know people

I've never really been a big pageant person. I don't have a problem with pageants, but I haven't ever really set out to watch one.

I've seen the Miss America Pageant a few times. I've never really watched the whole thing, but I've dropped in on it from time to time when there wasn't much on TV.

Tonight, though, for the first time ever, I'm planning on watching the pageant. The whole thing.

Because this time, for the first time ever, I know one of the contestants!!!!

I've actually known M!ss Oklahoma, T@ylor Tre@t, for several years. She's a few years younger than me, so I never knew her very well, but we are friends on facebook (and it was her doing back before she was M!ss Oklahoma). She's always been a very sweet, nice girl. She's really smart, very talented and very driven.

I can't wait to cheer her on tonight!!!

OH. MY. GOSH.

This totally changes my answer to the whole, "What's the first thing you would do if you were a man?" question.

Isn't this the most awesomest shirt ever?!

It's hilarious, and it's yellow. So the answer, of course, is yes.

It's a wonder I made it home safely

I've said a few negative things on this blog about Texas as a state, so when I come across something about living here that makes me smile, I feel it's only fair that I blog about that too.

The weather in Texas and Oklahoma is a lot alike. We both deal with tornadoes, humidity, a practically nonexistent spring, and incredibly hot summers with awful droughts and water shortages. Weather from day to day (outside of the summer) is completely unpredictable in both states. Wearing shorts in the morning only to see snow falling later (or vice versa) that night is something that I've experienced in both states.

In college, though, I was always surprised to hear Texans and Dallasites complaining about the Oklahoma winters. "It's freezing here! It doesn't get this cold in Dallas!" they'd say. I figured maybe it had something to do with that wind sweeping down the plains, but I couldn't imagine winter in OK would be as different as they made it sound. I guess I was wrong.

I'll never forget the first "winter storm" I encountered after I moved to Dallas. All the local news stations were doing regular weather updates before there was ever even a drop of precipitation. Yes, snow and ice were in the forecast, but it was still sunny outside! Our department at work (at my old job) called a quick meeting to let us all know that we could leave early if we needed to so we could be sure to be home and safe before the weather got bad. We discussed arrangements for work the next day in case the roads were "still" slick. I was amazed to hear of the many, many businesses that were closing early (like 11 a.m.) that day while the weather was still fine simply because of the fact snow was in the forecast for that afternoon. And of course (unpredictable, remember?), the weather was nothing near as bad as expected. In fact, what actually hit was ridiculously minor. The roads were fine the next morning.

(from Monday's snowfall)

Until March, it hadn't really snowed in Dallas this year. We got a whole inch on Monday night (it was mostly melted by Tuesday morning), and when the forecast called for more snow this afternoon, it was all anyone could talk about. Many of my co-workers started leaving to work from home as early as lunchtime.

When I left work shortly after 2 (any excuse to work in my pjs!), it was only raining, as it had been all day, but the roads were already as jammed as during rush-hour traffic. I passed two accidents on my 1 mile of highway driving. Once I got home and turned on the TV, all the local stations were showing was weather coverage. One station had even overdramatically labeled it "Major Winter Storm."

Even though the snow stopped hours ago, the gym tonight was completely dead, as were the roads on the way there. Many businesses and schools are opening late or are completely closed tomorrow just in case the roads get slick tonight. My office is waiting until tomorrow to make a decision. Just in case, I brought everything I'd need to work from home tomorrow so I could be prepared.

The forecast is showing our chance of snow extends into tomorrow. I'd just feel much better knowing I didn't have to worry about being out on the road in case another Major Winter Storm comes and dumps a whole inch of snow on us again.

My conscience cost me $9.07

I wear a watch every day. I rely on my watch every day. So when I glanced at my watch this morning sometime after 9 (but definitely not after 10) only to read that it was 12:20, I knew a visit to W@l-Mart was in my near future.

I left my watch on just because taking it off would no doubt be an uncomfortable experience either because a) I'd feel naked, or b) I'd keep glancing at my bare wrist, waiting for it to tell me what time it was, which could possibly result in someone saying that oh-so-horrid "hair past a freckle" joke in response to my missing watch. Being temporarily misled 50 billion times in one day was definitely the best move.

Immediately after dinner tonight, I headed to W@l-Mart to get my watch battery replaced. I headed straight for the jewelry counter, where a man was waiting behind the counter. I asked him if I could buy a watch battery there.

"Yes," he answered.

"Can you replace the watch battery here too?"

The man asked me what kind of watch I had. "Fossil."

"No, we can't do that," he answered. I don't remember his reason why he couldn't change my battery because instead of listening to him, I was too busy trying to figure out how to ask him if he could just change the battery anyway.

Turns out I didn't have to.

He waved me over to a different area of the counter. I handed him my watch, and he started taking it apart to replace the battery.

"I could get fired for doing this," he told me.

"Really? I won't tell. After all, it is a ... Seiko."

"It is?" he asked, looking up at me from my watch.

"Yes," I said with a wink.

"Really?" he asked me. I glanced down at the back of my watch, which was just below his hands. He was pretty much looking right at it. It had a giant F on it. For "Fossil."

... "No."

He had actually believed me. As he continued working, the man mumbled something that sounded like, "Tell ya what, if you just leave a $5 or $10 bill in one of those brochures over there, I won't charge you for the battery."

"What?!" I asked. Surely I'd heard him wrong. But he repeated just what I thought he'd said.

I had no idea how to respond. "Am I going to get in trouble?"

The man laughed at me. "No."

"Will you get in trouble?" The man told me no one would see it. I was to put the money in a brochure, put the brochure back, and walk off and leave it. At the end of his shift, he'd grab the brochure as he left.

I thought about what he was saying. I could get a free battery, and I'd just have to pay him $5. Not that I had any change; I just happened to have a $20 bill from a trip to the ATM last weekend.

But I couldn't steal.

Then again, it was W@l-Mart. It's not like they'd miss a stupid watch battery.

But it was a dishonest thing to do. A dishonest thing to do at Christmastime. Which is even worse than any other time of the year.

I asked the man how much the battery was. He told me it was $4.07.

I knew that if I left W@l-Mart without paying for that battery, I'd feel bad. Possibly for the rest of my life (After all, I do still feel really bad about the two $1 hair bands I stole when I was in the third grade. My mom asked me where I got them, and I lied and told her I won them in class. The store I stole them from closed most of its stores a few years later.). And $4.07 just isn't worth that strain on my conscience.

I told the man I needed change. "How about I pay for the battery and get change that way?" I asked him.

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah. That way both our consciences can be clear."

"My conscience is clear," he told me. I bit my tongue.

I paid for the battery, and because I felt obligated, I placed a $5 bill in the brochure. I put it back in place, and I walked off to continue my shopping.

I started to feel perturbed about the whole experience. Sure, the man had helped me by changing my battery, but he made me feel obligated to pay him for doing something other than standing there. Not cool. I wanted to go back to the counter and grab the brochure with my $5 bill in it.

But I didn't. Instead, I grabbed the few items left on my list, paid for them and left the store. Even after all that, I had the nagging feeling like I'd done something wrong.

Leave it to me to pay more than twice the cost of the battery to avoid having a guilty conscience, only to leave with (you guessed it) a guilty conscience. That's the last time I go there to get a new watch battery.

Look out, K-Fed!

Heidi and Spencer from The Hills have a song out! Heidi actually sings, and Spencer blesses our ears with the worst rap performance since K-Fed.

The song itself isn't so bad (minus Spencer's lame 5-second part), but I can't help but wonder how much is Heidi's voice and how much is computer-aided.

Why you should always think before you speak

(from a conversation at work yesterday with a coworker)

CW: You're so lucky you get to come in late tomorrow.

Me: Whatever! It's because I've got my not-fun doctor's appointment -- the "You're gonna feel a little pinch" one. Yeah, whatever.

CW: Oooooh. Yeah. I haven't been to that appointment in years!

Me: Are you serious? That's the one appointment I always keep up with. [pausing]

Well, that and oil changes.

And then there was one

I live by myself, in a one-bedroom apartment, with one bathroom. It's perfect for just me. I've lived by myself for one year, 11 months and three weeks. For a likely OCD person who loves things to be "just so," that's a lot of time to get used to finding things right where you left them.

I love having people come to visit me -- especially if it's someone I haven't seen in a while -- but at the same time, if they stay for several days, I'm always glad to have my place to myself again.
It was great to see CG again and to have her staying with me. We went dress shopping, looked at magazines, and hung out and caught up. It was nice.

However, we are totally different people. I like my air conditioner set to 78. To me, the air conditioner is a mechanism that makes your home cool, not cold. Not to CG. She prefers to be bundled up under blankets in the summer. CG feels "sticky" and hot when I feel comfortable. But the biggest difference (at least when she's staying at my place, it feels like the biggest difference) is that I'm ultra-neat and orderly, while she's quite a bit more on the laid-back side -- but only when it comes to cleaning.

CG talks at about 300 miles an hour, and she always has really long stories to tell; she constantly flips through channels on TV; she tosses and turns in her sleep; and she's developed a recent list of random allergies (dairy products and even Mary Kay makeup) and a very opininated stomach (Saturday night, she had a stomach ache and thought Mexican food would give her indigestion. Sunday afternoon, she was craving Mexican. So much, in fact, that we had it again at her request last night.). She requires a lot of energy. But it's one of the things I love about her.

I really enjoyed her visit. But I'm really going to enjoy having my cozy little place to myself again.

~~*@*~~!! ThAnG$ I 1-dR bOuT tN@Gr$ !!~~*@*~~

  1. Do they ever get tired of capitalizing EvErY oThEr LeTtEr? Does it not take them twice as long to do that in emails?
  2. How many different symbol combinations do they try before they find the perfect one (for that day)?
  3. Do they really know what all those abbreviations mean?
  4. Do they spend more time studying online lingo than they do for school so they can translate their own conversations?
  5. What do they do when all those "pretty" symbols don't fit on one line (see my subject?)? (My hard work is ruined -- I'd never make it as a teenager today!)

Ya'll are awesome!

Thanks for the kind words after my last post. They really did help.

And today was better overall. My checkup at the oral surgeon's went well. They even trimmed most of the stitches that are still left, so there's less poking into my gums now. I still have headaches and ear aches, but nothing a couple Advils can't handle.

We had a work lunch today, so we all went out to a Mexican restaurant. I ate more food at lunch today than I've had in at least an entire day's time since my surgery. I ate two enchiladas, half of a soft taco, most of my beans and a little of my rice. Yesterday, I only ate a hot pocket, a Jello pudding cup and some Easy Mac. I also ate a little bit of ice cream, but it was light anyway, so it doesn't even count. :)

I now have to squirt water with a little syringe-like thing into the back of my mouth after everything I eat, but it hasn't been bad so far. I actually started feeling more like myself again today -- meaning perkier -- which was nice.

So was the lack of drama in my inbox!

Pretty lazy lately

The last couple days have been pretty lazy. I got up yesterday morning and went to church with ER. After, we went to lunch with her grandmother and aunt. I was able to find something soft at Macaroni Grill that I could chew with just my front teeth. It was a nice break from potatoes and pudding.

After lunch, I came home and vegged out. I didn't really feel like doing anything, but ER is about to go to Ch!na for a month. She called to see if I wanted to meet her and another friend at the mall, so I went. We were only out for a couple hours, so it wasn't bad. I managed to not spend any money too, which was good.

I wasn't really in pain yesterday, but I was a little uncomfortable. My ears hurt a little bit, and my temples were throbbing. I just wasn't feeling like myself. I didn't feel like talking much, and I just wanted to lie on my couch at home. At the same time, it was good to get out of my apartment for a bit.

I went to bed early last night -- around 10. I woke up at 3 a.m. feeling like I was going to be sick. Luckily, after lying there for a while the feeling went away, but I felt sick again when I woke up to get ready for work this morning. I sat on the floor in my bathroom for a while thinking I'd get sick. I was ready to get it over with so I'd feel better, but on the other hand, I was worried it might mess up my stitches. That wouldn't be good.

I wound up being okay. Once I got to work, I started drinking water and the feeling went away. I went to lunch with a friend of mine who started interning at my work today. I was able to get around my craving for pizza by eating a pizza sandwich. It was almost as good.

I still wasn't feeling quite like myself this morning, but all in all, this hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be. And a few days of discomfort is definitely worth not having to deal with the pain of my wisdom teeth coming in again!

Blurbs

  • My mom still hasn't answered my email about the Florida wedding.
  • I talked to my high school boyfriend's mom, who I still keep in touch with, and she is coming to the Florida wedding. In fact, she flies into Dallas from two weeks in Europe the day before the Florida wedding. Instead of leaving the airport to head home, she's hopping on another plane to Florida!
  • My wisdom tooth surgery is tomorrow. I'm so ready to have them out! Especially since the gums around my bottom left wisdom tooth have been swollen all week.
  • The best part? I get to lay around tomorrow and take naps, and I get to watch movies all day with ER, who is driving me to my surgery. And I get to eat ice cream and Jello all day -- doctor's orders!

You know you're extremely OCD when ...

I was working on something at my desk when my (married) cubemate turned around to me and said, "I have a quote. It's good enough to interrupt you."

I turned to her as she read aloud from the paper she was reading: "Forget love. I'd rather fall in chocolate."

I was quiet.

"I like that," she said.

Feeling like she was wanting my opinion on the quote, I said, "Well, at least love can help you burn calories, and chocolate only adds them. Plus, chocolate would be really hard to wash off."

She laughed at me.

Since you did such a good job with the voting for the dress ...

My wisdom teeth have been coming in for quite a while now. I've mentioned the pain they've caused in my blogs a few times.

Well, my lovely (not quite so new now) new job brought a fabulous thing into my life: dental insurance. This Friday, I'm having all four of those annoying little suckers removed from my mouth. I'll be relieved to have them out, but it'll be a crazy experience for a few days.

I'm guessing many (if not most) of you have had yours removed. Any advice?

(Please save all horror stories for after June 22.)

Getting ready is getting to be quite an ordeal!

In junior high, I had an awesome getting-ready-for-bed routine: I showered, brushed my teeth, splashed water over my face and was done. But in high school, I started noticing my friends were doing other things -- they had Clearasil or Noxzema, and some of them even had face lotion. I started experimenting with those too.

In college, I went to a friend's makeup party, where I was introduced to a different face wash and lotion. I liked how clean they made my face feel. I was supposed to wash and moisturize before bed and each morning. Twice a day was a little more than what I wanted to do, so I rebelled by only using the moisturizer at night.

Later in college, I was introduced to a new skin care line, which added facial toner to my routine. Eventually, though, I switched again, and a new triple action moisturizer was also added to my morning and evening mixes. I got eye cream and an acne cream for breakouts. I started using eye makeup remover rather than leaving my waterproof mascara on overnight.

My post-shower routine evolved as well, adding several steps before I was ready for bed. I got leave-in conditioner. I started drying my hair with a blow dryer. I started moisturizing more than just my legs.

A few months ago, I went to the eye doctor to get a new prescription for contacts. My sophomore year in college, I'd started sleeping in them and only changing out my one-month disposables when they started hurting my eyes, which generally took about three months. My optometrist, though, told me I should start taking my contacts out each night and even throwing them away after only one month of wearing them! I promised him I would, so I added taking my contacts out to my nightly routine and putting them in to my morning repertoire.

And last week, I did something I hadn't done in an embarrassingly long time: I went to the dentist. The appointment went well. My teeth were in good shape, but the enamel on my back teeth is getting thin. The dentist wrote me a prescription for a rinse that will help to build it back up. The assistant also told me I should start flossing.

I don't know anyone who flosses every day. Before Thursday night, I pretty much only flossed after eating popcorn and sometimes after strawberries, so this will be a big change for me. I wasn't excited about it, but I want my teeth to be pretty and in good condition, so I'll cooperate.

Regardless of my lonely membership in the Daily Flosser Club, my morning and nightly routines seem to be getting longer and longer by the month. I haven't even had a chance to go get my rinse prescription filled to add that to my routine.

I can't think of much else that could be added to my morning and evening routines. I don't know if I can handle much more. If I keep up this pace, I'll be spending my entire day getting ready for bed by the time I'm 40!

An officer and a jackass

I've only watched one season of The Bachelor -- the one with Jesse Palmer -- and that was mainly because a girl from Oklahoma was in it and went all the way to the final two. Maybe Jesse Palmer would be happily married today if he'd chosen her instead of the 22-year-old.

I've seen a few episodes of this season, which is called The Bachelor: An Officer and a Gentleman. I was intrigued by the title for obvious reasons. K is the perfect example of an officer and a gentleman, and I own a great movie by the same name as the one they've so generously given the star of this season's show.

I watched this season's first show with ER, who is a huge fan of The Bachelor. She thought this season's guy was hot. I thought he looked like a human ventriloquist dummy. He's a doctor, so he kept telling every girl he was making out with some line about giving her a physical. Ugh!

I don't like to throw up, so I realized in that first episode that watching this season wouldn't be a good move for me.

But Monday nights are slim pickins as far as TV shows go, so I did see a few minutes of a couple more episodes before I had to change the channel in disgust. Tonight when I came home, I turned on my TV, which I'd left on ABC from Good Morning America this morning. The finale of the show was on. I decided to watch it for a good laugh.

This season's stud didn't let me down.

He cried, he tickled and he went topless for the cameras a few times. He said on the final date with both girls that it was so perfect and romantic. He said after each girl told him she loved him that it was exactly what he needed to hear from her.

He managed to tell both of the women left in the final show that he loved them. It was classic.

Then, it was time for him to see each woman to tell her his decision. His speech sounded very memorized and very unspontaneous. Then, the girl started crying. All of a sudden, he was saying really sweet things to let her know how much he cared about her and that he didn't want her to feel rejected. He was being genuine and sweet. Finally.

Again, though, not to let the viewers down, it was time to reveal his feelings for the chosen girl. It was back to the ventriloquist dummy we knew all season long. He gave his goofy grin, he put the pauses in the right places, and he even made their kisses sound like a squegee.

And she said yes. So congrats on your engagement, Mr. Bachelor. Guess this means now you can finally give a girl that physical you've been dreaming of -- and here's hoping you don't need an exam yourself after she sees you feed 20 other women that same line.
